I was a little apprehensive about doing this experience however it turned out to be one of the most fun action-packed days I've had in a long time! Being a bit of an adrenaline junkie, I felt like I had 'done everything' but canyoning (or 'gorge walking') was a completely different experience altogether! Think: heights, water, abseiling, swimming, jumping, climbing and picturesque mountains and you pretty much have canyoning summed up! I didn't realise there was an experience that encompassed all the adrenaline staples in one go, however canyoning did just that.
We arrived at Bala Watersports in the morning and quickly got changed into wetsuits (Bala provide these, you just need to bring your own swimwear, towels and trainers). We then drove in convoy to the Snowdonia National Park and got suited up in buoyancy aids, harnesses and helmets. After this we walked down through the mountains and got to our starting point. There was certainly no 'easing in to it'! One at a time we stood with our backs to the water, arms crossed across our bodies, and 'fell' back into the water off the rock edge. After that it just got more and more fun and adrenaline filled! We swam through pools of water, jumped off high rocks, abseiled down a cliff into more water, dropped off the edge of waterfalls... and much more. There wasn't time to get scared or worked up about anything, although if you really did not want to participate in a particular part you could opt out.
Our instructor, Will, put everyone at ease and ensured we were all safe whilst having a great time. At no point did I feel the 'health and safety' bore taking its toll on our fun filled day, yet I felt safe and secure throughout the experience.
After an action-packed and fun filled few hours we headed back up to the top of the mountains and got changed into some very welcome warm clothing and ate lunch. I honestly had such an amazing day and cannot wait to do this again! I would highly recommend to all adrenaline junkies out there.
Top Tip
Wear trainers that are comfy, with good grip that you don't mind getting wet and muddy.
