Cruise along the Thames and witness Oxford like you've never seen it before. Witness the tranquil countryside in its abundance; bird wildlife chirping as they swoop and dive, horses and cows quietly chomping on grass and laying in the summer sun, whilst the river is in full flow with rowers, boats and cruisers intermingling together, making Oxfordshire a bustling, yet charming, place to be.
The cruise includes a gourmet picnic with only the freshest, best produce that is available. It is a beautiful, quintessential way to spend a British afternoon whilst travelling through the city of Oxford, taking in famous sights such as Christchurch College and Meadows, the University boathouses and regatta course as well as the Head of the River and Folly Bridge. As you follow the river round, you will also find yourself in rare territory that consists of the breath-taking gardens and well-loved allotments as well as the majestic Port Meadow.
Following Port Meadow is Godstow which was the ultimate destination of the infamous Alice Liddell and iconic children's author, Lewis Carroll. They followed the exact route this Oxford Picnic Lunch Cruise for Two takes whilst writing his classic, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". This wonderland of Oxfordshire reveals Trout Island which was the inspiration behind C.S. Lewis's "Chronicles of Narnia" stories. If you know a literary lover, and English Literature student, or an obsessive of children's books, this would be the ideal experience for them! What more could they wish for, but sitting exactly where their beloved literary heroes thought of their bestselling work?

I was lucky enough to go on this wonderful picnic cruise along the Thames at Oxford. We departed from The Folly restaurant on a gorgeous Edwardian style river boat which is powered by an electric engine making the journey very peaceful. After we boarded the boat we were presented with a cute picnic basket containing a delicious picnic comprising of a savoury tart with the crumbliest pastry, beautifully presented finger sandwiches with the most flavoursome fillings all topped off with freshly baked scones, which were still warm, served with clotted cream, strawberry jam and fresh strawberries, this was washed down with a carafe of elderflower pressé (alcoholic drinks could be bought at the restaurant and taken on the boat).
The boat left Folly Bridge and wound its way up towards Port Meadow going through Osney Lock on the way. This part of the river is only accessible to smaller boats because of the low bridges so it is rather special. Our guide/crew member gave a great commentary as we went along pointing out interesting buildings and landmarks as well as telling many fascinating and amusing anecdotes. After turning around at Godstow Lock we headed back down the river stopping off at a lovely pub for a quick drink and comfort break. The whole trip was lovely including the warm welcome from the restaurant staff, the beautiful boat, delicious picnic, the amusing and knowledgeable guide and, of course, the beautiful scenery.
Top Tip
Make sure you wear clothes appropriate to the weather, blankets are provided on the boat and there is a canopy. Make use of the facilities at both the start and the pub en-route as there isn’t a toilet on the boat. Enjoy.
