It’s time to be as free as a bird!

Falconry is a wonderful way to get in touch with the connection between man and our flying friends.

A truly historic pursuit, going back generations, this is a timeless experience. In medieval times, falconry was used as a form of pageantry at weddings and other such occasions.

Your experience will involve handling the birds yourself, along with tutelage on the skills needed to have a natural looking technique. You’ll then enjoy a show by the professionals – an incredible display, showing you exactly how it should be done! You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to get photos of you and your new feathered friend.

You’re as free as bird now!

What did your experience entail?
After arriving at a cute little pub out in the Country in Epping, we made our way to the bar to get a cooling drink and were directed round the back for the 3-hour taster session. The event was being run by a falconer from a falconry centre which is home to one of the largest collections of Birds of Prey in the UK; including a few rare ones, of which we were lucky to meet a few of!
The day we attended there were 6 birds of prey present: 3 Owls, 2 Falcons and 1 Eagle. The session consisted of a quick safety briefing and what to expect, we then got to hold three of the birds in a rotation while the lady presenting talked to us about the birds. Even my bird-enthusiast partner learnt a few new things. We then got to the flying demo, where the group had turns having Trigger the barn owl fly to us from his perch. At one point he landed on a parasol and got startled by a passing motorbike and landed by the holder's feet - earning giggles from the group. We then held the other two birds and finished with final questions. The expertise, kind handling and direction of the falconer meant we felt safe around the birds and we all enjoyed our day with these beautiful creatures.
What did you enjoy the most?
Meeting the individual birds and learning all about them was a delight. They all had their own personalities and everyone got a turn to spend time with each of them. My favourites that we met were Sam the Bateleur Eagle; with his colour changing face (red = happy, yellow = grumpy) was so impressive and very affectionate asking for cuddles (with the keeper). Then there was Flo the Black-banded owl who was elderly and very sleepy, but so cute and Trigger the Barn Owl who was the cheekiest.
Top Tip
1.Clear space on your camera roll - so many opportunities for photos. 2.Add on a willing friend - great experience to share and makes for having a good photographer! 3.It is a 3-hour experience, so take the necessities and comfort items you need for a day out! Camping chairs a great idea for the more rural locations.

A lifetime ambition fulfilled
I would never have done this if someone hadn't bought the experience for me. I've always been interested in birds of prey and thought I knew a lot about the subject but how wrong I was. Being so close to a Peregrin Falcon streaking past us at full speed was the icing on the cake. Great day.

Very educational
My friend gave me the ticket for my birthday - what a wonderful 3 hours I had in a beautiful area of the country. The 'hands on' experience with the birds was fantastic!
