For over 200 years, the steam train has provided a mode of transport; once essential, it is now a charming reminder of how things used to be. With the Steam Train Experience for Two, history buffs and train enthusiasts alike will appreciate the chance to experience travel as it would have been at the turn of the last century. For a fascinating experience about how steam power changed the way the world worked, this activity cannot be missed!
On arrival at your chosen venue, you can swap your voucher for steam train tickets at the ticket office.
The experience on offer will vary depending on the venue you choose. Some journeys are all day rovers which allow you to get on and off throughout the day and some are return journeys. Either way, you can explore the local area as well as enjoying your steam train experience.
Some locations have other attractions included in the ticket price such as a museum or information centre.

What did you get up to?
We arrived at Nene Valley Railway, Wansford a little early, so we sat in the Cafe and had a Cornish pasty and Cappuccino. We then went outside and walked about until it was time to board the train. You had a choice of private booths or public, we decided on a private booth. First stop Yarwell this is the end of the track in the opposite direction to Peterborough. On route you go through a tunnel that lasts approx. 2 minutes our very knowledgeable conductor Andrew told us that this was the tunnel that was used in the James Bond movie Octopussy. We got off while we waited for the train engine to turn around to go back to Wansford and onto Peterborough, first stop on the journey to Peterborough is Overton where we stepped off for 5 minutes to take in the lovely morning sun and waited for more passengers to board, next stop Orton. Once we got to Peterborough, we took a lovely stroll into town, where we wondered about the malls and shops. On our way back to the station for our journey back home, we stopped along the canal and watch the people feeding the duck and swans. On our journey back we decided to sit in the public booths, we ordered something to drink from the Buffet car on the train, it is very well stocked with food, drinks and all sorts. There are lovely little gift shops at all the stations where you are able to purchase memorabilia or some lovely goodies.
What did you enjoy the most?
Our favourite part of this experience was chatting to Andrew the conductor whom is very knowledgeable and just taking in the lovely country side. The sheer beauty of the Autunm colours with the changing season.

Absolutely amazing!
This was a gift from a friend of ours as part of our joint 50th present and we didn't really know what to expect. We were heading down to Glastonbury area and so booked our trip on the East Somerset Railway for our experience. It was magical. It was like stepping back in time and into a more relaxed way of living. We arrived a bit late and were worried about the train departing without us but were greeted by an older gentleman who assured us the train wouldn't leave without us. The staff were incredibly helpful, friendly and attentive and even though the trip was only a couple of miles it was absolutely brilliant! We have absolutely zero interest in heritage machinery but I cannot recommend this experience highly enough! It was fascinating and to sit inside the old carriages and smell the smoke and feel the chugging and the noises. It was a feast for the senses! Absolutely brilliant time! And a heart felt thanks to all the people who work there!

What a lovely stretch of railway
carriages were the old vintage type, with plenty of seats available
Only down side was no steam engine as lack of volunteers, but still enjoyed the 22-mile journey

While we had a lovely day out we were Disappointed that the steam train couldn't run because the weather was very hot, and the scenery was spoilt because of all the big hedges and lack of scenery, However the village was lovely and we had a great pub lunch.
